Generally, brake pads have to be replaced every 30,000 to 40,000 kilometres, and sometimes more often, depending on the factors mentioned above. Brake discs offer increased longevity and can last up to twice as long as brake pads. However, this lifespan doesn’t only depend on the quality of the brake discs installed, but also on your driving style.  

The more you use your vehicle and the braking system, the more quickly they will need to be replaced. However, if the discs are getting worn unevenly, or if they’re heavily scratched, then replacing all discs or pads simultaneously is recommended.  

How Do You Know It’s Time to Change Your Brakes? 

Here are some of the signs indicating it’s time to change your brake pads: 

• You feel vibrations when you push down the brake pedal. 
• You hear unusual noises. 
• You notice the braking distance is longer than before. 

These signs should make you think, and it would be wise to quickly make an appointment with your mechanic for a check and, if needed, have the brake pads replaced.

Changing the brake pads doesn’t take long, but it depends on the vehicle’s model year and the complexity of its braking system. Generally, brake pad replacements can take from 30 minutes to 1 hour per axle. As for brake discs, you can calculate 1 to 2 hours per axle, and a little bit more if the calipers also have to be changed.  

On average, front and rear brake replacement can together take from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the vehicle.
